Mike Birbiglia comedy has landed him gigs on Comedy Central and made him a regular on PRI's This American LIfe: He uses Twitter: to riff with fans and has been developing material on his blog: for almost a decade.

I don't like to label myself a storyteller or comedian, says Birbiglia. I just think of myself as being someone who's inspired by a lot of art.

His latest manifestation is a book. _Sleepwalk With Me_: is based on his one-man off-Broadway show by the same name produced by Nathan Lane in 2008.

First loves, failed loves, schoolyard bullying, family crises, discouraging stand-up acts, and, of course, sleep disorders fill the pages. It's a funny read, to be sure. But Birbiglia takes care not to confuse humor with levity. Comedy is a means in an end, not an end in itself, he says.

That comedic philosophy guides Birbiglia on the page and the stage. It's the juxtaposition of the two that make the more serious moments (like his mom's struggle with chronic pain) and the lighter moments (like trying to make out with girls in middle school) more powerful.

I don't think of it as being serious or funny or dramatic or not dramatic. I think of everything I write being, 'How much can i be like life?', says Birbiglia.

Mike Birbiglia's newest show is called My Girlfriend's Boyfriend, and he is currently working on a film adaptation of Sleepwalk With Me.

Comedian Mike Birbiglia has appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman, Late Night With Conan O'Brien, The View, and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. In 2008, Mike Birbiglia teamed up with producer Nathan Lane to present Sleepwalk With Me, a painfully funny one-person show about first love, denial, and how the sleepwalking disorder that nearly killed him might have saved his life. The New York Times called the show Simply perfect, and it was twice extended, earning Mike nominations for both a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Circle Critics Award for Best Solo Performance. The Boston Globe has described Mike's stories this way: As honest as any Richard Pryor confession and as engaging and inclusive as an old Bill Cosby record. Mike is a popular contributor to shows as diverse as The Bob & Tom Show and This American Life. In 2009 Mike headlined his own Comedy Central tour, called the I'm in The Future Also Tour. He performed standup in more than 30 cities and universities across the country. Mike Birbiglia is also hard at work on his next comedy album and next one-hour special, and is currently working on a screenplay adaptation of Sleepwalk With Me, as well as a collection of short stories to be published by Simon & Schuster. Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015.
