A few days after Hae’s body is found, the detectives get a lead that opens the case up for them. They find Jay at work late one night and bring him down to Homicide. At first, he insists he doesn’t know anything about the murder. But eventually he comes clean. He tells them what happened on January 13th. A few weeks later, he’s back at Homicide and his story has changed. In some ways, these changes are small and understandable. In other ways, they’re big and confounding.

Adnan once issued a challenge to Sarah. He told her to test the state’s timeline of the murder by driving from Woodlawn High School to Best Buy in 21 minutes. It can’t be done, he said. So Sarah and Dana take up the challenge, and raise him one: They try to recreate the entire route that Jay said he and Adnan took on January 13th, 1999.

The state’s case against Adnan Syed hinged on Jay’s credibility; he was their star witness and also, because of his changing statements to police, their chief liability. It’s a true crime story that captivated a nation, and even though its final episode aired in December, season one of the podcast “Serial” continues to make news. At the heart of the story is Adnan Syed, convicted in 1999 of killing his high school girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. Justin George, a Baltimore Sun reporter who was featured on the podcast, took NewsHour’s William Brangham on a tour of the spots in Woodlawn, Maryland, that were featured in Serial.

Featured in this tour are: The Best Buy parking lot, where the prosecution alleges Syed took Lee to murder her in her car; Leakin Park, where Lee’s body was found buried behind a log; and The Woodlawn Public Library, where McClain says she saw Syed during the time the prosecution said Lee was being murdered.

The Penn Law Muslim Law Students Association hosted Rabia Chaudry on March 26 to talk about the case of Serial’s Adnan Syed. In 1999, Syed was convicted of killing Hae Min Lee, a 17 year-old classmate at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore, Maryland. The suspicious circumstances of Syed’s conviction emerged under the national spotlight from the blockbuster Serial podcast presented by journalist Sarah Koenig.

Chaudry is a National Security Fellow at the New America Foundation, a Fellow of the Truman National Security Project, and a Fellow of the American Muslim Civic Leadership Institute. She is credited with first bringing Syed’s case to Koenig’s attention and brings a fresh, new perspective to this troubling case.

The work of Serial has spawned a review of the case by The Innocence Project – a national litigation public policy organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals through DNA testing and reforming the criminal justice system.
